What is a Japanese soaking bath?
Deep soaking puts immersion at the centre of the experience, in less floor length than a standard bath.
A short, deep bath for seated immersion.
A Japanese soaking bath — an ofuro — is a short, deep bath designed for seated immersion rather than reclining. Japanese bathing traditionally separates washing from soaking: you wash first, then enter the bath to soak. Because the bath is not doing the washing, it can be built for depth instead of length.
AQVA baths are inspired by that logic and made here. A 1140 mm AQVA bath occupies less floor than a standard 1700 mm bath, with an integrated seat and a deep well.
How it differs from a standard bath.
| Standard Australian bath | AQVA deep-soak | |
|---|---|---|
| Posture | Reclined | Seated, upright |
| Typical length | 1500–1800 mm | 1140–1300 mm |
| Designed for | Washing and bathing | Soaking |
| Seat | None | Integrated |
Depth is only comfortable when it's supported.
Depth on its own is not the point. A deep bath is only comfortable if you are supported in it.
Every AQVA model has a flat-topped integrated seat with a radiused front edge and a defined foot well, so you sit at a set height with your feet placed rather than braced. That is what makes a long soak possible.
Deep soaking is not the same as a spa.
Deep soaking describes the posture and depth of the bath itself, not any added equipment. A spa configuration adds stainless-steel hydrotherapy jets and a circulation system to the same deep-soak bath — smooth, quiet circulation at consistent pressure, with every pump and spa system pressure-tested before it leaves the factory.
Frequently asked questions.
What is deep soaking?
Deep soaking is seated, upright bathing in a short, deep bath, instead of reclining in a long, shallow one. It puts immersion at the centre of the experience rather than length.
How is a deep soak bath different from a standard bath?
A standard Australian bath is 1500–1800 mm long and designed for reclining. An AQVA deep-soak bath is 1140–1300 mm long, with an integrated seat, and is designed for seated soaking instead.
Do you wash in a Japanese soaking bath?
Traditionally, no. Japanese bathing separates washing from soaking — you wash first, then enter the bath to soak. Because the bath isn't doing the washing, it can be built for depth instead of length.
Is a deep soak bath comfortable to sit in?
Every AQVA model has a flat-topped integrated seat with a radiused front edge and a defined foot well, so you sit at a set height with your feet placed rather than braced. That is what makes a long soak possible.
Is deep soaking the same as a spa bath?
No. Deep soaking describes the posture and depth of the bath itself. A spa configuration adds stainless-steel hydrotherapy jets and a circulation system to that same bath — the deep-soak geometry is the same either way.
Is a deep-soak bath good for a small bathroom?
Yes. A deep-soak bath gives you a full soak in 1140–1300 mm of length instead of 1500–1800 mm, which returns floor area to the rest of the room. Depth replaces length.
